Comtech Telecommunications Corp. Receives Contract to Provide AN/TRC-170 Troposcatter Modem Upgrade Kits to the U.S. Military
MELVILLE, N.Y., Apr 05, 2005 (BUSINESS WIRE) — Comtech Telecommunications Corp. (Nasdaq: CMTL) announced today that its Orlando, Florida-based subsidiary, Comtech Systems, Inc., has received a contract award of approximately $1.0 million from the U.S. Military to provide four modem upgrade kits consisting of Comtech’s 8 MB/s Model CS 678 High Data Rate Adaptive Modem and a multiplex interface to other battlefield communications equipment. The Comtech modems are replacing the existing modems currently in use in the U.S. Military’s AN/TRC-170 Digital Over-the-Horizon Microwave Terminals. In addition to its 8 MB/s adaptive over-the-horizon modem, Comtech is providing engineering, field support and training. The modified terminals will be used in the U.S. Military’s “Roving Sands” exercise. There are over 600 TRC-170s in the U.S. Military inventory.
The modem provides full redundancy, improved bit error rate performance, built-in diagnostics, and reduced size and weight. The modem also offers an optional quality monitoring system to monitor communication path performance, as well as a power control capability to automatically adjust the transmitted power level. Both of these features are unique in the industry.
Fred Kornberg, President and Chief Executive Officer of Comtech Telecommunications Corp., said, “This contract is the direct result of the success of our previous demonstrations of the feasibility of using our state-of-the-art digital adaptive over-the-horizon modem to more than double the data rate of the AN/TRC-170, Over-the-Horizon Microwave Troposcatter”.
