The most demand for commercial troposcatter links is for telephone service providers such as PTT’s, and oil and gas prodution companies. An example of commercial telephony is the Comtech Systems’ project in the Bahama Islands to provide troposcatter systems to connect islands that are not accessible by microwave or other means. The troposcatter systems provide a link between the islands, telephone exchanges and cell sites. The Comtech Systems’ project provided five digital tropo links and two microwave links operating in the 2 GHz band. All the tropo links are equipped with Comtech’s advanced digital troposcatter modem and adaptive transmit power control, which minimizes transmit power and reduces interference problems with other services in the 2 GHz band.

An example of a Comtech Systems’ supplied troposcatter link for an offshore oil platform. This link is operating in the 4400 MHz to 5000 MHz band. Tropo links for offshore platforms are typically designed for 8 MB/sec for IP based services. Equipment is also available in the 1800-2400 MHz and 7400-7700 MHz bands.
