Principal Communications System Engineer

Position Description

A senior member of the engineering staff who performs research, analysis and design of communications systems involving troposcatter, microwave, HF and VHF radio.  Responsible for system design, link budget calculations and systems deployment. Works closely with program management, taking a lead role in providing a technical interface with customers.  Takes a senior role and assumes complete project responsibility and in some cases leads a team on a specific project. Acts as a mentor and coaches engineering team members. Can work independently within the group with little or no direct supervision. Should have a strong interest in communications and RF technology.

Key Duties

  • Performs and reviews systems analysis against performance requirements
  • Designs systems to meet performance requirements including generation of system block diagrams and writing detailed specifications.
  • Performs link analyses and identifies technical solutions for the resulting communications paths
  • Generates and reviews system integration plans and procedures for products and systems.
  • Reviews data collected from manufacturing and applications sources and identifies product improvements and modifications to improve performance.
  • Participates in preparing cost summaries and writing technical documents for bids and proposals
  • Generates and reviews system interconnect drawings, wire-run lists, assembly drawings.
  • Works with mechanical engineers on packaging of cabinet-mounted equipment, shelter-mounted equipment, and design and deployment of microwave antenna systems.
  • Mentors and coaches engineering team members.
  • May lead or act as a support team member on major projects.
  • Involved in other related projects as assigned by management.

Required Experience

  • Must have a thorough understanding of communications theory and systems, specifically microwave radio, satellite and troposcatter systems including experience on the following:
  • Modems, transmission standards and methods.
  • Systems analysis and design
  • Link budgets analysis
  • RF engineering including antenna systems
  • Generating technical documents, specifications, test plans and procedures
  • Tracking and reporting project progress including tracking project budgets
  • Ability to lead a technical team in a fast paced environment
  • Familiarity with environmental requirements & packaging techniques for systems is a plus.
  • Must have or be able to obtain a passport and be available for business travel domestically and internationally.

Educational & Experience Requirements

  • Bachelors degree, Masters degree is preferred, in Electrical Engineering.
  • At least 10 to 15 years communications industry experience.
