Troposcatter is used to great advantage by oil and gas production companies for radio links to offshore platforms and between offshore platforms that are beyond line of sight or beyond the horizon. Comtech Systems provided some of the first troposcatter links for offshore platforms in the North Sea in the 2 GHz band. The pictures above show some offshore links in Malaysia and the North Sea. Besides these, Comtech Systems has also provided troposcatter links to offshore platforms in Mexico, and the Arabian Gulf.
Troposcatter systems provide high capacity, 8 Mb/sec links to distances exceeding 300 Km. Over a several year period, troposcatter systems are much more economical than VSAT terminals with a leased transponder. Other advantages of troposcatter over VSAT are there is no transponder delay and jitter associated with satellite communications transmission, troposcatter links are not subject to rain fade, there is no coordination requirement with other agencies as troposcatter links do not require any leasing, and there is no possibility of circuit outages due to satellite transponders being taken out of service.
Equipment is available in the 1800 to 2400 MHz, 4400 to 500 MHz and 7400 to 7700 MHz bands.
